animal clinic

Bound by Darkness

The animal clinic is more than a veterinary workplace: it is one of the few places where Larem q’Jones can exist without having his Kalith identity treated as a danger or a problem. Its cages, runs, medicine, and injured animals give him useful work and a community organized around care rather than suspicion. Through Dr. Isaac and Chance, the clinic becomes a sanctuary of conditional trust, while later serving as an emergency refuge for Larem and Sasha Willis when political hostility and physical violence close in around them.

Setting and Purpose

The clinic is reached through a back door and is marked by barking, yipping, growling, damp concrete, and the heavy smell of medicine. For Larem, those ordinary sensory details are reassuring rather than oppressive. No one there knows that his DNA is not human, and, more importantly, no one would have cared if they did. What matters to Dr. Isaac is that Larem has a gift for frightened animals and reliably appears when he has promised to work.

The compensation is poor, consisting largely of the animals’ tentative licks and wagging tails, but Larem accepts it because the work gives him a place in which his value is not reduced to his sword arm. He takes a lab jacket, fills his pockets with treats, and begins the day by seeing which patients need his help. The clinic therefore offers a quiet alternative to the institutions that classify, scan, employ, or fear him: usefulness here is measured through patience and trust.

Larem q’Jones and Chance

The clinic is the home of Chance, a badly abused dog who initially distrusts humans. When Larem first brings him into an outdoor run, Chance huddles in a corner and growls whenever Larem approaches. Gradually, the dog begins to accept the leash, the promise of a walk, and Larem’s presence. Chance’s progress gives the clinic a visible record of care: recovery is not presented as an instant cure but as a series of cautious decisions made by an injured animal.

Chance is a large white dog, about thirty inches high at the shoulder, with an intelligent face and a resemblance to a white wolf. Dr. Isaac cannot identify his exact breed, suggesting that he may have Great Pyrenees and shepherd ancestry, but describes him as a loner by nature. The description also explains the affinity between dog and Kalith. Both have been hurt by those who mattered most to them and are attempting to find peace without surrendering their wariness.

Their relationship changes decisively in the run. After exploring the enclosure, Chance approaches Larem, pauses as though weighing the risk, then rests his head on Larem’s knee. When Larem raises a hand, Chance accepts the touch and the friendship it represents. Larem then uses the healing warmth of the sun through his Kalith Healing Gift to ease Chance’s pain and encourage the bones in his injured leg to knit. Because the gift is still new, Larem limits its force; he often concentrates on relieving pain and calming traumatized spirits rather than attempting an overwhelming acceleration of recovery.

Dr. Isaac recognizes that Larem’s achievement is not merely technical. The dog remains suspicious of most people, yet allows Larem to approach and eventually permits the veterinarian to examine his injured leg. After the examination, Chance even accepts treats directly from Dr. Isaac’s hand. The clinic’s care thus depends on Larem’s relationship with the animal rather than replacing it: medical treatment becomes possible because trust has already been built.

Dr. Isaac’s Care and the Clinic Community

Dr. Isaac is the clinic’s human center and one of the few people who responds to Larem with uncomplicated concern. When Larem misses a shift after suffering a serious leg injury, the veterinarian worries because Larem normally calls if he cannot come. Dr. Isaac notices the limp, asks what happened, and immediately directs him to check on Chance, who has been staring at the door and apparently missing him.

That concern runs in both directions. Larem returns despite pain and frustration because the animals soothe his restless spirit, and because they need care that does not depend on understanding the political conflict surrounding the Kalith. Dr. Isaac’s routine examination of Chance becomes a small test of the trust Larem has created. Chance remains still while the veterinarian handles his fur and injured leg, whining only slightly, and the successful examination confirms that the dog’s recovery is continuing.

The clinic also gives Larem an identity that is not defined by institutional suspicion. In other parts of Seattle, Kalith people are described as enemies, pets, or threats, and rumors turn their presence into evidence of betrayal. At the clinic, Larem is judged by whether frightened animals can accept his touch and whether he shows up for his shift. That contrast makes the setting politically significant: its modest ethic of care quietly contradicts the larger culture of surveillance and exclusion.

Refuge During Conflict

The clinic later becomes an emergency refuge when Larem brings Sasha Willis to its heavy door after violence leaves him with a bloody hand. Dr. Isaac initially says the clinic is closed, but recognizes Larem, steps aside, and offers immediate medical help. He introduces himself to Sasha while acknowledging that the circumstances are terrible, turning the workplace into a shelter for people as well as animals.

The refuge is not isolated from danger. When someone approaches the back door, Larem draws his gun and tells Sasha and Dr. Isaac to remain inside while he investigates. Chance follows him, apparently believing that Larem needs backup. The dog’s presence changes the clinic’s role once again: it is not merely a place where an abused animal receives protection, but a place from which that animal participates in protecting the people who have earned his trust.

The scene also links private care to the wider political crisis. Larem and Sasha discuss the resentment of guards who feel betrayed by the Paladins’ friendship with the Kalith, as well as Sasha’s effort to correct the wrongs committed by Colonel Kincade. The clinic provides temporary physical safety, but its deeper importance lies in the relationships that make safety possible: Dr. Isaac admits Larem, Larem protects the clinic, and Chance stays close behind him.

Narrative Significance

Chance’s recovery and the clinic’s welcome offer a counterimage to the punitive use of medical procedures elsewhere. Colonel Kincade used scans as punishment, whereas the clinic’s examinations are conducted slowly, with consent and attention to fear. Even when treatment is necessary, the narrative emphasizes the patient’s response and the caregiver’s responsibility to avoid overwhelming an already damaged body.

The clinic also complicates the boundary between human and nonhuman life. Larem’s Kalith biology enables him to heal animals, yet his strongest contribution is ethical rather than biological: he recognizes fear, permits distance, and treats trust as something an animal can grant or withhold. Chance is not simply a device for displaying Larem’s compassion. He retains suspicion, makes choices, resists unwanted contact, and later follows Larem into danger. The animal clinic is therefore a place where damaged beings are not required to become harmless before receiving care; they are allowed to recover at their own pace, and their growing trust can become a mutual form of protection.
